Manuel Arenaz, CEO at Appentra Solutions, will do a demonstration of Parallware in the Cloud Challenge. This is a collaborative work with the University of Coruña (UDC), the University of Sydney (Australia) and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (USA). The work presented at UCC 2014 is “Optimizing Scientific Workflows in the Cloud: A Montage Example” by Qingye Jiang, Young Choon Lee,Manuel Arenaz, Luke M. Leslie and Albert Y. Zomaya.
The work addresses the optimization of scientific workflow execution in clouds by exploiting multi-core systems with the parallelization of bottleneck tasks. Our main contribution is the assistance in the analysis and parallelization of the bottleneck task mBgModel of the Montage workflow. The performance evaluation using a 6.0-degree Montage workflow with OpenMP running on Amazon EC2 shows a reduction in completion time by 21% to 43% depending on the instance type being used to run the workflow, without any impact on the cost.
Cloud Challenge is a competition where participants develop solutions for real-world problems by utilizing virtualization technologies and Cloud computing. The competitors have to submit their proposals outlining the nature of the problem that might range from business, scientific to socio-lifestyle applications, the methodology used to solve the problem and the means of validation of the solution. Further the competitors have to outline how characteristics of Cloud computing and virtualization can lead to business value, or to improve existing processes, practices, tools and applications. The steps that lead to the successful adoption of Cloud computing and virtualization services have to be explained.
Our collaborative work is one of the finalists at UCC 2014. Next tuesday we will do a presentation of the contributions as well as a demonstration of the DEWE workflow management tool and of the Parallware parallelizing compiler. Follow us to know the results of the UCC 2014 competition!
